The job then enters the building on the
track to be cleaned and painted.
Once inside the building, the cleaning
process begins.
The job is loaded onto a unique, moving
track by way of chains and hooks specially designed for our
needs.
The cleaning process is done by a large
shot blaster. Micro-sized BB's of metal are "shot" at the body from all
directions, clearing all rust and debris off the job.
In the 5 minutes it takes to clean a job,
up to 12 tons of steel shot has been blasted against the metal at the speed of a
rifle bullet.
For bodies passing through the shot
blaster that have collected shot pellets inside the body, a unique dumping
mechanism is used to dump the contents of the body.
Now that the job has been cleaned and
also gained a static charge from the metal to metal friction in the shot
blaster, painting commences.
Two paint booths are used in the painting
process. The first is a computer operated automatic painting system.
Sensors turn on and off automatic powder paint guns which paint the job as it
moves through.
After leaving the auto-paint booth, the
job moves into the second, manual paint booth.
In the manual paint booth, up to four
people armed with powder paint guns go over the job to ensure that every nook
and crannie is covered with powder paint.
An up close and personal inspection of
the entire job is sometimes needed to guarantee that every spot is
covered.
Now that the powder paint is on the job
and clinging to the metal, it's time for the final step of the
powder
coating process.
Baking the powder paint onto the metal is
the final step to the process. A large oven uses 450 degrees of heat to
cure the paint.
Running an oven at 450 deg. for a
prolonged period of time uses a lot of fuel. So much fuel is needed that
nine large propane tanks are needed to keep a good stock.
The baking oven measures 156 ft.
long. At 9 million BTUs, the oven heats to 450 degrees
Fahrenheit.
At the end of the oven, the job then
comes back out the same end of the building it originally came
in.
As the job leaves the building, it has
the chance to cool down in temperature as it makes it way back to where it was
originally placed onto the overhead track.
